Indonesia has once again reaffirmed its position as one of the leading voices of the Global South in shaping the architecture of global economic governance. This commitment is reflected in Indonesia’s active engagement in various platforms for cooperation among developing countries, particularly through the Developing Eight Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8), an important forum that brings together major Muslim-majority developing economies to strengthen more balanced global economic collaboration.
As one of the key members of the D-8, Indonesia continues to advocate for stronger economic cooperation among developing nations to better navigate global uncertainty. The forum unites eight countries with significant economic potential: Indonesia, Türkiye, Iran, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Egypt, and Nigeria working collectively to enhance trade, investment, and sustainable development.
Advancing Fairer Global Economic Governance
In various D-8 meetings, Indonesia has consistently emphasized that global economic growth must be strong, fair, and inclusive. Expanding equitable access to international financing and strengthening trade cooperation among developing countries remain central priorities.
Indonesia also encourages the development of innovative financing mechanisms, improved trade connectivity, and deeper collaboration in the digital economy. Such efforts are essential to ensure that countries of the Global South do not merely serve as markets, but emerge as key actors in shaping the direction of the global economy.
As a concrete example, Indonesia has highlighted best practices in digital financial inclusion through its national payment system, QRIS (Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard). This initiative demonstrates how innovation from developing countries can provide cost-effective solutions to expand financial access for broader segments of society.
Food Security and the Humanitarian Dimension
Beyond economic issues, Indonesia also encourages the D-8 to strengthen cooperation in food security. With hundreds of millions of people worldwide still facing the threat of hunger, Indonesia stresses that food should not be viewed merely as an economic commodity, but as a fundamental human right.
Indonesia has also underscored the importance of disaster risk reduction as an integral part of sustainable development. As an archipelagic nation located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” Indonesia possesses extensive experience in responding to natural disasters. This experience offers valuable perspectives for building stronger resilience systems across developing countries.
Consistent Global South Diplomacy
Indonesia’s commitment as a leader of the Global South is also reflected in its active participation in broader multilateral forums. Indonesian diplomacy continues to advocate reforms in global governance so that international systems become more equitable, representative, and responsive to the needs of developing nations.
Through cooperation platforms such as the D-8, Indonesia demonstrates that countries of the Global South are no longer merely objects of global policy. Instead, they are increasingly taking an active role in shaping agendas, proposing solutions, and defining new directions for the global economy.
With inclusive diplomacy, adaptive domestic innovation, and a strong commitment to solidarity among developing countries, Indonesia reaffirms its role as a key driver in strengthening the position of the Global South on the global stage.
